    PRESS RELEASE

ON THE ELECTION RESULTS IN VENEZUELA

CDI-IDC welcomes the recent electoral victory of the Democratic Unity coalition (MUD) in Venezuela.

“I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to our party member COPEI for a tremendous job done under very difficult conditions. Our party’s efforts ensured that democracy and the rule of law prevailed over populist pretences which threaten the basic rights Venezuela subscribed to. This time around, democracy has triumphed,” said the CDI-IDC President Andrés Pastrana.

“Our organisation is aware of the enormous work that lies ahead in order to rebuild what the populists have lost in the past. We will remain at your side so that Venezuela re-enters the international scene and occupies the place it deserves,” added the CDI-IDC President.

“We deeply regret that the opposition leader Luis Manuel Díaz was vilely killed during the electoral campaign. We also regret the numerous violent incidents that happened against the very logic of democracy,” said the CDI-IDC President Andrés Pastrana.

“The election results are a victory for us and the entire international community which is fighting to strengthen the human rights and the rule of law. The Venezuelans have showed with tremendous courage that democracy works. This is a victory of the Venezuelan people and my message to them is: we count on you, we are there for you, and you can always rely on us,” reassured Antonio López-Istúriz, the CDI-IDC Secretary General.

“We congratulate the people of Venezuela for demonstrating to the international community that the society is capable of overcoming fear, fighting against injustices, intimidation, and violence of the Maduro government. Their courage has made it possible for the elections to be transparent, legitimate, and based on democratic principles,” continued López-Istúriz.

The IDC-CDI has repeatedly drawn attention in its resolutions to the inhuman, undemocratic and shocking situation in Venezuela. This shows that speaking up won over the dictatorship.
