TBrussels, 23 July 2012

The President of the Centrist Democrat International (CDI), Pier Ferdinando Casini, today expressed his sorrow about the death of Cuban leader of Movimiento Cristiano de Liberación (MCL) and honorary Vice-president of the CDI, Oswaldo Payá.
Casini stated "Oswaldo Payá's efforts in Cuba were tireless and exemplary in promoting, always by peaceful means, the change his country needs. His death is a great loss for all those who have been working for decades in order for the island to overcome the long-standing dictatorial regime and to peacefully advance freedom and democracy for all Cuban citizens. It is also very bad news for the Christian Democrat political family", said Casini.

"Payá's outstanding work will remain and will continue to serve the efforts for making Cuba a country where freedom and human rights are respected," CDI President also added.
Casini also deeply regrets the death from the same accident of Cuban dissident Harold Cepero, and also sent his wishes for a speedy recovery to the Spanish member of the youth organisation of Partido Popular (PP), Angel Carromero, and to the Swedish member of the youth organisation of Kristdemokraterna (KD), Jens Aron Modig, who were wounded in the car accident.
